The engagement rate formula
Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over the posts you entered. Engagement rate by reach replaces followers with the number of accounts that actually saw the post. Brands increasingly ask for the reach-based number because it is not inflated by inactive followers.
What is a good engagement rate in 2026
On Instagram, 1 to 3 percent by followers is average, 3 to 6 is good, and above 6 is excellent. TikTok runs higher (3 to 10 percent), LinkedIn around 2, and X and Facebook below 1. Smaller accounts almost always have higher rates, so a nano creator with 5 percent and a macro creator with 1.5 percent can both be healthy.
How to improve your rate
Post carousels and Reels (they collect saves and shares), ask a specific question in the caption, reply to every comment in the first hour, and remove ghost followers by not buying followers in the first place. Use the Instagram Money Calculator to see what a higher rate does to your sponsorship price.

Questions
Should I count saves and shares?
Yes if you have them. They are the strongest signals on Instagram and TikTok.
How many posts should I average?
Your last 10 to 12 posts give a stable number. Exclude viral outliers when pitching brands.
What is the difference between rate by followers and by reach?
By followers divides by your audience size; by reach divides by the people who saw the post. Reach-based is usually higher and more honest.
Does the calculator connect to my account?
No. Enter the numbers from your Insights; nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I use it for competitor accounts?
Yes, with their public likes and comments. Reach is not public, so use the by-followers rate.
