Instagram username rules

Usernames can be up to 30 characters and may contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. They cannot end with a period, cannot contain consecutive periods, and must be unique across Instagram. This generator follows those rules, so every idea is technically valid; availability still has to be checked.

What makes a username easy to find

Short names with real words are easier to type and remember when someone hears them in a video. Avoid numbers that look like a birth year and avoid long underscore chains. If your first choice is taken, adding a niche word (riya.fitness) is better than adding digits (riya_2847). Use the same handle on TikTok, YouTube and X so people can find you everywhere.

Changing your username later

You can change your Instagram username at any time, but your old links and tags stop working, and the old name becomes available to others after 14 days. Pick carefully and update your bio link, YouTube description and business cards when you do switch.

Questions

How do I check if a username is available?

Click Check next to any idea. A 'page not available' result usually means it is free; confirm in the app under Edit profile.

Can usernames contain emojis or spaces?

No. Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

Why do some ideas have numbers?

The numbers style adds the current year or short numbers, which helps when a plain name is taken. Prefer the clean style if possible.

Is the username the same as the name field?

No. The name field can contain spaces and emojis and is searchable; the username is your @handle.

Does this work for TikTok?

Yes. TikTok has the same character rules and a 24-character limit.
