Hashtags still matter for photographers in 2026, but not the way they did in 2019. Instagram’s recommendation system now reads your caption, the image itself and the first hour of engagement; hashtags are the labels that help it categorise your work and push it to people who follow those topics. Used well, a hashtag set gets a new portrait photographer in front of people who actually book portraits. Used badly (30 generic tags copied from a list), it does nothing.
This guide gives you working sets by genre and explains how to mix sizes. Paste any of them into the Instagram Hashtag Generator with your own keyword to expand or shuffle them.
How many hashtags should photographers use?
Instagram’s official advice is 3 to 5. Tests across creator communities in 2025 and 2026 still show 8 to 15 relevant tags outperforming 3 for accounts under 100k followers. Above 15 you get diminishing returns, and 30 generic tags can look like spam.
The rule that matters more than the count is the size mix:
| Size | Posts on the tag | Role | Share of your set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Niche | under 100k | Easy to rank in the top section, exact match for your work | 35% |
| Medium | 100k to 1M | Where most discoverability happens | 40% |
| Popular | over 1M | A short burst of impressions, buried quickly | 25% |
Run your final set through the Hashtag Counter to remove duplicates and check you are under 30.

How to build your own set
- Start with 2 or 3 tags that describe exactly what is in the photo (subject, style, location).
- Add your genre’s medium tags from above.
- Add 2 or 3 popular tags.
- Add one branded tag (your name or studio) so your own posts cluster together.
- Rotate: keep a base of 6 tags and change the rest every post.
Or type your keyword into the Instagram Hashtag Generator, pick the Photography niche and let it build a balanced 20-tag set that you can trim.
Where to put hashtags
In the caption after a few line breaks, or in the first comment within a minute of posting. Both reach the same. If you want a clean caption, generate it with the Caption Generator and use the dot-separator pattern it adds before the tags.
Mistakes to avoid
- Banned or restricted tags. If a tag shows no recent posts when you tap it, drop it. #photography itself has been restricted in the past.
- Tags that do not match the photo. The system compares the image to the tag’s typical content; mismatches hurt.
- The same 30 tags every post. Instagram treats repeated blocks as low-effort. Rotate.
- Hashtags in the bio. They are clickable but do not help discovery.
FAQ
Do hashtags work for Reels? Yes. Reels are driven by the caption text and audio first, but 5 to 10 relevant hashtags still help the first hour.
Should I use hashtags in English if my audience is local? Use both: English tags for reach, local-language and city tags for clients.
How do I know which tags worked? Instagram Insights → post → Reach → From hashtags. Compare sets over a month.
