The short answer

The recommended YouTube thumbnail size is 1280 x 720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The file must be under 2 MB and saved as JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP. YouTube accepts a minimum width of 640 pixels, but anything smaller than 1280 x 720 looks soft on TVs and large screens.

If you already have an image in another size, drop it into the YouTube Banner & Thumbnail Resizer, choose Thumbnail 1280x720, and download.

Why 1280 x 720 and not bigger

YouTube stores several versions of every thumbnail: 120x90, 320x180, 480x360, 640x480 and 1280x720. The 1280x720 version (called maxresdefault) is the largest it serves, so uploading a 4K image gains nothing except a bigger file. Upload exactly 1280x720 and you control how it is downscaled.

You can see all the stored sizes for any public video with the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader. It is a useful way to check how competitors’ thumbnails hold up at the small 320x180 size that most viewers see on mobile.

Where your thumbnail actually appears

Design for the smallest placement, not the biggest.

  • Mobile home feed: about 360 px wide. Text under 30 px tall becomes unreadable.
  • Desktop search results: 360 x 202 px.
  • Suggested videos sidebar: 168 x 94 px. Only large faces and 2-3 word text survive here.
  • TV app: full 1280x720. The only place fine detail is visible.

A good test: shrink your thumbnail to 170 px wide. If you cannot read the text or recognise the face, simplify.

The safe zone

YouTube overlays two elements on thumbnails:

  1. Duration badge in the bottom-right corner (roughly the bottom-right 15 percent).
  2. Watched progress bar along the bottom edge for returning viewers.

Keep text and faces out of the bottom-right corner and above the bottom 8 percent of the image. The resizer tool shows the full frame so you can position the subject before exporting.

File size: how to stay under 2 MB

A 1280x720 JPG at 85 to 90 percent quality is usually 150 to 400 KB. PNG files with photos can exceed 2 MB quickly. Rules of thumb:

  • Photos and gradients: export JPG at 85-92 percent.
  • Flat graphics with large text: PNG, or JPG at 95 percent.
  • Never upload a screenshot straight from a 4K monitor; resize first.

Shorts thumbnails

Shorts use a 9:16 vertical frame (1080 x 1920). On mobile you cannot upload a custom thumbnail; you select a frame from the video while uploading. On desktop you can upload a custom 9:16 image. In the subscription feed and search, Shorts can still appear as 16:9 cards using the centre crop, so keep the subject in the middle third.

The channel banner (channel art) is a completely different size: 2560 x 1440 with a 1546 x 423 safe area in the centre for mobile. The resizer tool has both presets with the banner safe zones drawn on screen.

Thumbnail design checklist

  1. One clear subject (a face or a product) filling at least a third of the frame.
  2. Three words of text maximum, bold sans-serif, strong contrast outline.
  3. Colours that differ from YouTube’s white and dark interface: yellow, orange, cyan, bright green.
  4. Consistent style across videos so returning viewers recognise your channel.
  5. The thumbnail and title should say different things. Title: what. Thumbnail: why it matters.
  6. Test two versions with YouTube’s Test & Compare feature for at least a week.

Common mistakes

  • Tiny text that reads fine in the editor but disappears on phones.
  • Busy backgrounds that fight the subject. Blur or darken them.
  • Text in the bottom-right hidden behind the duration badge.
  • Misleading images that cause viewers to leave in the first 10 seconds. That drop in retention hurts far more than the extra clicks help.
  • Same thumbnail as the first frame of the video, which makes the video look static in autoplay previews.

FAQ

What is the best YouTube thumbnail size? 1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB.

Can I upload a 1920 x 1080 thumbnail? Yes. It is 16:9, so it works, but YouTube will downscale it to 1280 x 720. Upload 1280 x 720 directly to control the result.

Why is my thumbnail blurry? The image was smaller than 1280 x 720, the JPG quality was below 70 percent, or it was upscaled from a small source. Re-export from the original at full size.

Does the thumbnail affect SEO? Indirectly. Click-through rate and the retention that follows are strong ranking signals. The image itself is not read for keywords.
