How to Add Line Breaks in Instagram Captions and Bio (3 Methods That Work in 2026)

Instagram removes blank lines from captions and bios. Here are three methods that keep your spacing on iPhone and Android, including the invisible-character trick and a free tool.

You write a caption with neat paragraphs, post it, and Instagram squashes everything into one block. This has annoyed creators for a decade and it still happens in 2026, especially when you paste a caption from a notes app or type it in the Instagram app on some Android phones.

The fix is simple once you understand why it happens. This guide covers three methods, from the quick in-app trick to a one-click tool that works every time.

Why Instagram removes line breaks

Instagram strips whitespace at the end of lines and collapses lines that contain nothing but spaces. A “blank” line between paragraphs is, technically, an empty line, so it gets removed. Lines that contain any visible or invisible character are kept.

That is the whole secret: a blank line must contain something.

Put an invisible Unicode character on each empty line. Instagram sees a non-empty line and keeps it; readers see a blank line. The character is the Braille blank (U+2800), which renders as nothing on iOS, Android and the web.

Doing this by hand is fiddly, so use the Instagram Line Break Generator:

  1. Write or paste your caption. Press Enter twice wherever you want a blank line.
  2. Keep “Invisible line breaks” selected.
  3. Click Copy caption.
  4. Paste into the Instagram app and post.

The spacing survives on every device we have tested, including Android phones that strip breaks typed directly in the app.

Method 2: The dot method (classic)

Type a single period on each empty line:

First paragraph of the caption.
.
Second paragraph.
.
#hashtags #go #here

Readers see small dots, which many creators now consider dated, but it is reliable and needs no tool. The Line Break Generator has a “Dot separators” option if you prefer this style.

Method 3: Return key in the app (sometimes)

On iPhone, the Return key in the Instagram caption field inserts a real line break. Pressing it twice usually creates a blank line that sticks as long as the line above has no trailing space. Delete any space at the end of the previous line, then press Return twice. If you copy the caption from elsewhere, this often fails, which is why most people use Method 1.

On Android the Return key is inconsistent across keyboards (Gboard works more often than Samsung Keyboard). Use Method 1.

Line breaks in the Instagram bio

The bio has the same problem plus a 150-character limit. Two options:

  • Paste your bio through the Line Break Generator; each invisible character costs one of your 150 characters.
  • Edit the bio on the desktop website (instagram.com → Edit profile), where Return creates real line breaks that are kept.

The Instagram Bio Generator produces three-line bios with the count shown so you stay under 150.

Line breaks in comments and DMs

Comments strip blank lines the same way. Paste a comment through the tool with “Invisible line breaks” and the spacing is kept. DMs keep line breaks natively.

Formatting captions that get read

Spacing is not decoration; it is what keeps people reading past the “more” link.

  • Hook in the first line, under 125 characters, because that is all that shows before “more”.
  • One idea per paragraph, two or three lines each on a phone screen.
  • Blank line before the call to action so it stands out.
  • Hashtags last, after a blank line or a dot block, or in the first comment.

Generate a structured caption with the Caption Generator and run it through the Line Break Generator before posting.

Troubleshooting

The spacing disappeared after I edited the caption in the app. Editing in the app sometimes strips the invisible characters. Paste the full caption again instead of editing in place.

I see a weird symbol on the blank lines. Your keyboard app replaced the invisible character. Copy from the tool page directly, not from a notes app.

My caption is over 2,200 characters. Each invisible character counts. Remove a few blank lines or shorten the text; the tool shows the live count.

FAQ

Does Instagram allow line breaks in captions? Yes. It only removes lines that are completely empty.

What is the character that makes blank lines work? The Braille blank, Unicode U+2800. It is invisible but counts as a character.

Can I add line breaks after posting? Yes, edit the caption and paste a version from the tool. Avoid editing line by line in the app.
