How to Add Chapters to YouTube Videos (and Why They Aren't Showing)
Add YouTube chapters by listing timestamps in the description: start at 0:00, at least 3 chapters, each 10+ seconds. Fix common errors and use chapters for SEO.

How to add chapters
- Open the video in YouTube Studio → Details.
- In the description, add a list of timestamps, each on its own line:
0:00 Intro
1:24 What you need
3:10 Step 1: Setup
6:45 Step 2: Editing
9:30 Results
- Save. Chapters appear on the progress bar within a few minutes.
The YouTube Chapters Generator cleans up timestamps in any format and checks every rule before you paste.
The three rules
- The first timestamp must be 0:00.
- At least three chapters.
- Each chapter at least 10 seconds long.
Break any rule and YouTube ignores all of them. Timestamps must also be in ascending order and on separate lines.
Why chapters are not showing
- First line is 0:01 or 00:05 instead of 0:00.
- A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds.
- Timestamps are inside a sentence instead of starting the line (older videos).
- “Automatic chapters” is turned off and your manual list has an error.
- The video is too short or is a Short; chapters work on regular videos.
Chapters help SEO
Chapters show in search results and in Google as “key moments”, letting one video rank for several sub-topics. Use descriptive, searchable names (“How to set up OBS for streaming”) rather than “Part 1”. Viewers jump to the part they need instead of leaving, which protects watch time.
Make the rest of the description work too
Put the main keyword in the first sentence, add links and hashtags, and keep chapters near the top. The Description Generator builds the full structure, and the YouTube SEO Checker confirms chapters are detected.
